Resumo:
Relapsing polychondritis is a rare, chronic and degenerative disease that affects the integrity of who gets sick and carries successive hospitalizations, numerous clinical interventions and interdictions on the body of the subject. Thus, this study aimed to report the subjective experience and several meanings related to the diagnosis and treatment of relapsing polychondritis. Therefore, we used a study of descriptive and exploratory case with clinical-qualitative approach. The scenario for data collection was a hospital stay unit of a university hospital, located in northeastern Brazil. Participated in this study a woman 18 years of age, diagnosed with relapsing polychondritis. From the analysis of the results, checked two empirical categories: 1 - From denial to acceptance process and adaptation to the new reality; 2 - The hope of healing and the fear of death. We conclude that the knowledge of these subjective configurations is very important for the psychological support of people who have had the experience of chronic disease.
