The student enters the university world full of expectations and dreams, but when faced with a totally exhaustive dynamic, they move away from their social environment, friends and routine that developed before entering university, causing frustration, fatigue and discouragement, besides suffering in some cases. Therefore, the objective of this article is to discuss, through an integrative review of the literature, the forms of psychic suffering and coping strategies elaborated by students of higher education in Brazil. The present research is a descriptive study, based on an integrative review of the literature arranged in six methodological steps using a final sample of six articles. According to the types of studies, it was identified that 57% of the articles present epidemiological research methodology, one cohort and three cross-sectional studies. Only articles 3 and 5 presented a qualitative approach in their methodologies, thus determining the prevalence of quantitative research, approximately 75% of the articles. In order to choose the articles, the precepts of Bardin were used to predict the analysis of the work in three stages: pre-analysis, material exploration and treatment of results and interpretation of the titles and abstracts of articles, identifying a sample of six articles. Evidence that health courses are the most researched in terms of psychological suffering and these, present methods of protection called coping. The main methods categorized were: drug use and abuse; escape from reality; denial of problems. It is concluded that through this review the proposal of research aimed at identifying alcohol consumption and alcohol abuse among undergraduates, since only one of the selected studies approached this topic in a superficial way without deepening the influences of alcohol abuse during the graduation period.
