Changing the tactile sensory perception is a complication of Diabetes Mellitus, which progressively affects the sensitivity of the peripheral nerves, is an important public health problem because of the possible functional disabilities that compromise productivity, reduce quality of life and survival of individuals. This study aimed to describe the related factors and defining characteristics of the tactile sensory perception phenomenon altered in people with diabetes mellitus. The integrative review was carried out from August to September 2016 in the databases PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, MEDCARIB and BDENF. Among the 1371 publications identified by the descriptors association, and subsequent selection of articles involving the theme, in Portuguese, English and Spanish and excluding those involving animals, we obtained a sample of 30 studies. The related factors were: duration of diabetes, hyperglycemia, age and the level of glycated hemoglobin and, among prevalent defining characteristics pointed to sensory loss, pain, numbness and burning. The results revealed that the phenomenon is a common finding among people with diabetes, especially type 2 and therefore it is crucial that there is the involvement of health professionals, especially nurses, in the early identification of the problem and the implementation of prevention, control and treatment of the phenomenon.
