Resumen:
This monograph constitutes effective analysis of reports published by the Human Rights
Commission of the State of Paraíba, between the years 2009 and 2013, dealing with visits in
prisons in the state of Paraíba, under a human rights perspective. The paper develops the
concept of Human Rights on its historical context, from its origin to the present day, the
inspiring principles and reasons that lead people to mobilize in defense of a set of universal
rights. Throughout the text, the interpretation of constitutional norms and laws in Brazil and
in the State of Paraíba occurs, as well as international standards - notably the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights - which deal with human rights. Then, based on the reports cited
above, carried out research on the fundamental rights provisions within the prisons visited.
Finally, suggestions are proposed and presented the final considerations about the prison
analyzed here and the dignity of the human person.
