Résumé:
Death is a natural and inherent event in life, yet it is still a taboo topic, especially in Western
culture. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientific production on the perception of
nursing students about the process of death and dying. It is a bibliometric study, carried out
with 14 articles, published between 2009 and 2019, selected in the LILACS, MEDLINE and
BDENF databases and in the CAPES Portal. The years of 2009 and 2011 presented a greater
number of publications on the subject, with emphasis on three vehicles of dissemination:
Revista Gaúcha de Enfermagem, Revista Investigação e Educação em Enfermagem and Revista
da Escola de Enfermagem USP, with 28.5% of the works selected. The journal with the greatest
impact factor was the Revista de Divulgencia Cientifica Sena Aires with 1,021. The
investigation pointed out that most of the publications were conducted by researchers in the
field of nursing, with predominance of authors with the title of doctor. The perception of nursing
students about the process of death and dying pointed out some specificities: 1) death is a theme
permeated with feelings, such as uncertainty, fear, sadness, frustration, fear, impotence, since
it is an unknown event and unpredictable; 2) there are weaknesses in the teaching-learning
process on the subject during academic training in theoretical and practical disciplines; 3)
unpreparedness to act in the face of patient death situations; 4) personal difficulties related to
particular experiences involving the process of death and dying of family members, which are
projected on patients. It is necessary to consider interdisciplinarity and training in death
education in the academy so that nursing students and graduates are prepared to care for patients
in various life cycles, including death.
