Resumo:
The expansion of knowledge about the relationships that influence the sustainability of
agriculture, in rural development strategies is imposed as compelling today, considering the
recognition of the complex characteristic of each context as well as the trend with these
planning processes have occurred, occasioning social constructs supported by partnerships
between organizations and institutions all contributing to the consideration around mutual
influences between the factors or intangible capital on the factors or materials to the prospect
of sustainable development of territories capitals. Considering these aspects that developed
this thesis which deals with an investigation in the Valley of San Francisco Lower Basin,
northeastern hinterland, aiming to analyze the influence of the intensity of institutional capital
for the sustainability of agriculture developed in the territory Pedra Branca, irrigation
perimeter located between Curaçá-BA and Abaré-BA. Methodologically, the research is
characterized as descriptive, using the method of systematic approach, having as main tools
calculations of sustainability indicators. It employed the model proposed by Rocha (2008) for
calculating the Sustainability Index Institutional Capital and the model proposed by
Sepúlveda (2008) for calculation of the Sustainable Development Index model - IDS (S³). It
used different means to collect data from literature research, interviews, questionnaires, visits
to the field to collect data which have allowed the study results. It used different means to
collect data from literature research, interviews, questionnaires, visits to the field to collect
data which have allowed the study results. Thus indicating a low level of institutional capital
(ISCI = 2.0), due to the limited participation of farmers' organizations, low levels of
commitment, cooperation and number of institutional partners and an index of sustainable
development very low (IDS = 0.21) with a state of collapse of agricultural sustainability. It
was concluded that, to the extent that no multidimensional treatment of agricultural
sustainability, the political-institutional path-level territory, can hardly be glimpsed outputs
aimed at long-term, able to contemplate a diachronic perspective. At the same time, while
there is an improper culture by facilitating the participation of farmers and prevail isolation
from other government sectors and non-governmental, difficult steps toward data will be
sustainable goals and pursuit of sustainable development.
