Abstract:
Most of the solid waste produced in the country is destined for dumps in the open, which
leads to the search for measures that will alleviate this situation, such as the reduction of its
volume in its final destination, highlighted as an important management tool capable of
minimizing the amount of natural resources produced around the globe, thus becoming a
mechanism for preserving the environment. It is clear that the inadequate management of
solid waste is a constant problem in almost all cities in the country, being more easily
observed in large urban centers, where the socioeconomic gap is more advanced. As the city
of Campina Grande is considered a large developing center in the state of Paraíba, it produces
a significant amount of waste and that is awakening the interest in its final destination. Facing
these circumstances, this study had as main goals to evaluate the management of urban solid
waste in this city, making an analysis on social, as well as economic and environmental issues
through visits, photographs, questionnaire application and interviews. The survey results
show the need for measures that lead to the embracement of a more efficient solid waste
management, providing employment and income to the population through activities related
to the selective waste collection and recycling, and thereby contributing to the improvement
of the social inclusion and environmental preservation process.
