This research investigated how the textbooks in thematic environment and how they can contribute to the construction of an environmental education geared to the dimensions of sustainability and all the books used by the students of State Elementary School Clovis Pedrosa, located in the district of Ribeira -Cabaceiras/PB. Furthermore, the study showed the characteristics of these texts as they relate to the following aspects: encouraging awareness, compatibility with environmental problems, with the local language, concepts of environment and sustainability. The analysis was based on the concepts of environmental education, considering the contributions of Sauvé (2005), Moraes (1997), Veiga (2006), Sachs (2002) and Paulo Freire (2001, 2005, 2006) methodology, the research was qualitative, including a literature review on the topic of society, environmental education, sustainability and environmental concepts. Also presented a quantitative character, involving the characterization of the books recommended by the National Textbook - PNLD 2011, 2012, 2013, in the disciplines of Portuguese, Science, History and Geography Elementary School II in grades 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th year, totaling 16 units. The results of the investigation indicated that these books prevailing conception of environmental conservation / technicalities that prioritizes the technique without considering the social and political aspects of the locality in which the school is located. The environmental issue is treated generally without contemplating the specific social, cultural and environmental aspects of the Ribeira District - PB. The final proposal of this study is to suggest that school educators surveyed include the following environmental issues: disposal of solid waste, water use as finite resource, dissemination of "new" media on environment and sustainable development.
