Resumo:
The environmental and social crisis arising out of the prevailing socio -economic organization
that explores the natural resources taken as infinite for the production of goods and services
and ravaging nature pollution model forced with the design of the concept of sustainability ,
which proposes a more harmonious relationship with the environment. The present study is
build on this pillar and aims to assess the consumptive water footprint of the inhabitants of the
watershed Riacho Fundo in Cabaceiras -PB city, Brazilian semiarid region , and propose a
tool for quantifying the direct use of water, simulating scenarios for reusing household water
and identify changes in total water footprint in these scenarios. After collecting data on the
location, the software Water Footprint Calculator Extended , from Water Footprint Network,
was used to determine the total water footprint, the components and food categories. Was
developed a subroutine for Water Footprint Calculator Extended software , which determined
the volume of direct use of water in the place, and allowed the simulation of reusing water
from domestic use in outdoor activities. The average values was 807.07 m3 / year , 586.29
m3 / year , 174.59 m3 / year and 47.26 m3 / year, for the total water footprint, food component,
consumption of manufactured goods and water direct use, respectively . The average direct
uses external and internal water was 82,154 liters per week and 24,548 liters per week,
respectively. In 30 % reuse scenario , the total water footprint drops 2.78 % . At 50%
scenario, the reduction is 3.25% . In 80% and 100 % scenarios, there is a decrease of 3.37% .
