Résumé:
Nearly four decades ago a worldwide discussion process was initiated about the
problems created by the way of development centered on economic growth at the expense of
increasing environmental degradation and [to the detriment of] the social crises, materialized
in the growing economic and social disparity of the population. The issue took a great extent
and has led humanity to think about a new development model. The present study is inserted
in the context of sustainable development as a new form of working the development, having
as guidance the interrelationship between the variables “Sustainable Development”, “Systems
of Sustainability Indicators” and “Social Participation in the Local Development Process”,
choosing the city of Fagundes - PB for application of a case study. As a goal, the study sought
to identify the index of sustainability of Fagundes - PB through participation of the social
actors in the selection, evaluation and assessment processes of its sustainability indicators.
Regarding methodology, the study is characterized as exploratory and descriptive, employing
the techniques of bibliographical and documentary research, non-participant observation, field
research and content analysis. As a result, The municipal sustainability index was identified,
considered in a warning level, with the “demographic” dimension showing the best rate,
acceptable level, and the “economic” dimension presenting the worst case, at a critical level.
The study concluded that the objective was met satisfactorily and that the methodology used
presented significant progress with respect to the systems of sustainable development
indicators currently used for municipalities.
