Résumé:
This research aims to analysis the level of sustainability of the mining industry in the cities of Pedra Lavrada and Nova Palmeira – PB, from the Mining Sustainability Index (MSI), proposed by Viana (2012), making a proposition and adding indicators from the economic, social and environmental, with its measurement in six mining companies which best represent both counties, as well as analyzing the perception of the communities around them and making a general analysis of the data, concluding at the activity sustainability index. Despite mining being one of the basic sectors of the local economy it contributes decisively to the well being and improving the quality of life of present and future generations. It is of fundamental importance for the development of the society in question, provided that it is carried out with social responsibility, always taking into consideration the precepts of sustainable development. This developed research has an exploratory and descriptive, qualitative-quantitative nature and its method is focused on the study of multicase, with field research and non participative observations. The activity sustainability index in the municipalities of Pedra Lavrada and Nova Palmeira – PB were respectively (0.38) and (0.32), representing unsustainable rates. Thus, the overall average MSI was between (0.36), too low to achieve sustainability. But almost all companies managed to stay above this average, however proved to be unsustainable in all three dimensions. Despite the importance of the activity to the municipalities there are no actions that favor the development of this activity in the principles of sustainability.
