Resumen:
The atmospheric pollution in the great urban centers has been considered as one of the
greatest problems of public health, which culminates in the environmental disequilibrium.
Among the pollution emitting sources, we find the industrial activity as one of the main
sources, being the industry of cement production one of the most preoccupying concerning
to exposition possibility, causing impact on health and environment. Confronted with this
situation, this study was to evaluate the impacts of pollution from a cement industry in
quality of life of a community in João Pessoa - PB. It was a field study, descriptive study
with a sample of one hundred individuals, following a qualitative and quantitative
approach. Data were collected through interviews based on a semi-structured questionnaire
containing biological, economic, social and demographic, as well as pulmonary function
by measuring inspiratory capacity and peak expiratory flow. The results showed a
disadvantage with respect to socioeconomic issues, but also showed the relationship
between exposure to pollutants arising from industry, the influence of meteorological
parameters and adverse effects on the respiratory system, verified by the decrease in peak
expiratory flow and symptomatology breathing. It was proved that the Community of Ilha
do Bispo is the target of environmental pollution, thus requiring a policy of control and
elimination of pollutants, seeking the precautionary principle, and thus reducing the effects
on the environment and health. On health, it was found that the emission of pollutants
when influenced by meteorological factors affect the residents of the community,
especially during the rainy season, when these symptoms are more due to lower dispersion
of pollutants.
