Abstract:
Discussions involving sustainability have been increasingly evident in the face of concerns
about resource scarcity and the need to implement actions that can reconcile development and
sustainability. Inserted in this context, the universities need a methodology of action that
incorporates the dimensions of sustainability. This study is based on the premise that
universities are knowledge dissemination organizations that, through the teaching, research and
extension pillars, should take a leading role in guiding sustainable development and points out
strategic planning as a strong ally in its operationalization, through prioritization of actions that
enable the definition, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of actions that contribute to
sustainability. In this sense, this research had as general objective to analyze the academic
activities, in the teaching, research and extension axes of a university, Federal University of
Ceará, in order to verify how strategic planning can contribute to the achievement of the
Sustainable Development Goals. In order to do so, the curricular components, research projects
and extension actions were searched for aspects included in the agenda, seeking to classify and
size them as to the environmental, social and economic perspectives for which , in parallel with
the universities Institutional Development Plan (IDP) approach analysis, it would be possible
to point out suggestions that could contribute to an improvement in the alignment process
between planning and sustainability within universitiy. This is an exploratory and descriptive
research, using an approach of predominantly qualitative made possible by a bibliographic and
documentary study and using the technique of content analysis for data analysis. The research
reveals an educational institution still in evolution, but well structured and committed to the
dimensions of sustainability; a consistent and sustainable guidance IDP curricular components,
research projects and extension actions based on technological and innovative aspects and
tending to be flexible. It was also identified the need to promote greater initiatives focused on
environmental issues, and it was suggested as a suggestion of improvement the implementation
of a monitoring and evaluation system that uses sustainability indicators, pointing to the
methodology of the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard as reference.
