Abstract:
Using the IEC 61850, which defines communication within power plant substation
via network, it becomes evident the necessity of study the interference of problems
inherent to computer networks for critical and internal functions in substation.
This report describes a study of the influence of these delays, given an increase in
the amount of traffic on the network and any possible packet loss in the response
of the instantaneous overcurrent protection function. For such, IEDs will be
emulated in computers exchanging messages in a local area network. To perform
the experiment, an electrical system protection function was executed, in this case,
the instantaneous overcurrent function. Then, in a computer network, using three
and a switch, a simulation of the exchange of messages between the TC, IED, and
the circuit breaker was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the function for
various network problems and message rates.
