Abstract

This research aims to investigate the adaptation of the book Pride and Prejudice (Austen, 1813) to the web series in vlog format entitled The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (GREEN, SU, 2012-2013) in two sets of procedures: the first one regards the adaptation in a denotative level, taking into account the changes related to language (verbal to non-verbal); and the second one is related to the adaptation in a connotative level, concerning the new cultural context in which the adaptation is subscribed. Our specific objectives are: i) to observe how the original narrative is adapted to the vlog The Lizzie Bennet Diaries; ii) to identify themes related to the female context as it is presented in the book and verify which of them remain or are expanded in the vlog adaptation. The motivation to carry out this research lies in the fact that: a) the adaptation of classic literary works to vlog is a recent phenomenon; and in the personal interest on b) investigating how adaptations recreate a classic work and bridge socio-historical gaps, making a classic intelligible to a new audience. This work is of a descriptive nature, and it is inserted in the qualitative-interpretative methodological approach, being classified as a bibliographic study, since it is guided by two pre-elaborated cultural products. To achieve the goals of this research, the corpus will be analyzed in the light of the following theories: i) Intersemiotic Translation and Cultural Representation of Cunha (2013) and Diniz (2003); ii) The Adaptation Theory proposed by Hutcheon (2011); iii) Domestication and Foreignization in Translations of Venuti (2000); iv) the relationship between Translation and Cinema, Cronin (2009); and studies about v) Translating Literary Classics by Lianeri and Zajko (2008); vi) the Austenian Sociocultural Context by Abrams (1999), Gilbert and Gubar (2000), Perrot (2008) and Woolf (1929), and finally the studies that observes the vi) Vlog as a Textual Genre by Lima and Luna (2012) and Luna (2013). Results suggest that the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice was impacted by the recreation of a verbal linguistic text into a non-verbal language and its limitations, as, for instance, the characteristic syntax of the new communicative support (that is, the vlog) and the economic factor involved in the adaptation production; furthermore, the adaptation was also affected by the multiple socio-cultural differences between the nineteenth-century England (narrative space of the work Pride and Prejudice) and the twenty-first century USA (fictional dimension of the vlog The Lizzie Bennet Diaries), such as families new configuration, women's new status and ethnic groups that are part of the population. In addition, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries seems to claim Austen's critical testament and aims at portraying the USA society. The vlog also criticizes the lingering values that preach marriage as an imperative to women and shows that, even though the female sociocultural context has been through changes, modem women still face many challenges. Finally, we assert the value of adaptations and especially of the vlog The Lizzie Bennet Diaries by its original reinterpretation of a classic literary work.
