Resumo:
The aim of this research is to investigate the adaptation of the fairy tale Hansel and
Gretel to the cinema, taking into consideration intersemiotic elements associated with
contextual and temporal elements that might influence in the construction of the main
characters. This research is motivated by the growing popularity of film adaptations
based on fairy tales. The theoretical framework presents studies related to Translation
Studies, Adaptation and Cinema. Among the authors studied Hutcheon (2011) and
Mundt (2008) discuss literary adaptation and Cusates (2008) contributes with literary
translation. Regarding Translation Studies, contributions come from Oustinoff (2011)
and Jakobson (2000); while in the Cinema field considerations are presented by
Bernardet (2009), Aumont (1993) and Curado (2007). Contributions on fairy tales come
from Órru (2012) and Bettelheim (2002). Data collection was based on the descriptive
and interpretative approach as well as the qualitative one. The corpus consists of scenes
extracted from the movie presenting images and language that are relevant to our study
both in images and through subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese. Results have shown that
the movie adaptation of the literary work portraits elements that are similar to the
original story, as well as elements that are different. This varies due to the products and
elements involved in the adaptation such as producers, exhibitors and spectators.
