This research aims to present a discussion on oral acquisition of second language (L2) by preschool children mediated by their mother language (L1). We will present the theoretical assumptions of our work based on the studies of Vygotsky (1984) and other researchers who study the mother tongue in bilingual contexts (Atkinson, 1987; Auerbach, 1993; Cook, 1999; Mello, 2004; Mello 2009). The analysis will be made through an investigation regarding the frequency of the use of L1 during the acquisition of L2, taking into account two important aspects: for what purposes the mother tongue was used during the interactions that occurred in classroom l2 and the implications caused for this use. The results obtained through the analysis corroborate our hypothesis that L1, in a positive way, interferes with the acquisition of a second language of children who are in preschool.
