Resumo:
This research aims to investigate the use of foreign words originated from English in
Capricho magazine. The specific objectives are: to identify the English words presented in
four Capricho magazines, focusing on the different aspects of meaning that they present the
context and see how the English-speaking foreign words are used in the magazines. The work
is motivated by the high level of English language words found in Capricho magazines. This
work is of descriptive, qualitative and bibliographic nature, given that the object of study is
pre-prepared. To achieve the proposed objectives, the corpus will be analyzed based on the
following theoretical frameworks: a) expansion of the English language: historical context,
Crystal (1997, 2003) and Graddol (2000); b) English language influences in Brazil,
Rajagopalan (2005) Pasquali (2006), Garcez; Zilles (2001), Valadares (2014) and Fiorin
(2004); c) the law against borrowing, Bagno (2004), The definition of borrowing, proposed by
Valadares (2014) Bagno (2007), Garcez; Zilles (2001), Faraco (2001) and Arcari; Colaco
(2007); and d) The use of borrowing in magazines, Schmitz (2004), Vasconcelos (2008) and
Carvalho (2003). The results showed a high number of foreign words derived from English
which were incorporated into the Portuguese language, for lack of an equivalent word in
Portuguese, or a word in English to show more modernity and refinement. Other words have
been adapted graphically and phonetically for a better match to the lexicon of the Portuguese
language.
