Abstract:
This research aims to analyze the most recurrent English teachers' beliefs in a language
school located in Campina Grande, regarding the Communicative Approach and
considering the teaching learning process of English, by relating these beliefs to the
teachers' techniques and strategies of teaching. The Communicative Approach has been
the object of study of a variety of academic projects since it has come up as an
approach. By being an approach and not a method, unlike the forms of teaching that
preceded it, the Communicative Approach has a number of principles which need to be
recognized so that it can be used properly. This research is classified as descriptive
because it was performed through a questionnaire applied to the teachers that was
created to verify the most relevant teachers' beliefs who took part as volunteers about
the AC. In order to enable a better understanding of what the Communicative Approach
is, this work presents the theoretical assumptions and the main features of this approach,
along with a brief description about beliefs in the context of Applied Linguistics. While
doing this research, it was possible to notice that the beliefs related to the
Communicative Approach, as well as the techniques and teaching strategies adopted by
professors involved in this work to a great extent are in tune with the theoretical
assumptions of this approach.
