Depending on the dynamics of a landfill operation, the gravimetric composition of the
waste and weather conditions, factors such as the applied normal stress, moisture
content and unit weight of the waste vary at different points in the same landfill, which
makes it difficult to determine a single strength parameter to represent Municipal Solid
Waste (MSW), making it necessary to include these elements in the shear strength
analysis. The objective of this work was to determine the shear strength of landfilled
municipal solid waste, considering the variation of moisture and unit weight of the waste,
as well as the normal stress applied. The experimental field for the development of this
work was the Sanitary Landfill located in Campina Grande-PB, from where waste was
removed at the age of one year, for characterization and direct shear tests following a
factorial planning that made it possible to optimize the process of interaction between
the factors, analyze their influence on the shear strength of the residues and formulate
statistical models of shear stress. The variation of the applied normal stress, moisture
content and unit weight of the waste influenced the shear strength parameters of the
grounded MSW. Normal stress and unit weight were the factors that most influenced the
shear stress of the studied samples, followed by moisture content. The generated
models were significant for the determination of the shear stress of the grounded MSW,
considering the effects of normal applied stress, the moisture content and unit weight of
the waste.
