This dissertation is designed on the basis of our experience in the classroom in which
the unwillingness of the students of foreign languages in learning the English language
was realized, even the teacher showing the influence of English throughout the
contemporary world. We found in the searches for this work others of this theme that
only base on the opinion of teachers, we decided to explore the issue from the
perspective of the students. In order to contribute to some forms of representation of the
English language in the extension courses at Universidade Federal de Campina Grande,
with some opinions of other students of foreign languages on the English language and
exploring some possible causes that contribute to some o f these reviews. We applied a
questionnaire to 20 students o f foreign languages of the extension courses at UFCG and
through these questionnaires four types of answers for analysis were organized, each set
of responses was analyzed in its issues of linguistic, discursive and social
representations observed in these responses, finding in the theoretical concepts of social
representation to assist this analysis, of authors as Jovchelovitch (1994) and Sa
(1993). Finally, one reaches the conclusion that some students have negative social
representations about the English language by creating a barrier to their learning and our
possible contribution as teachers to reverse this situation.
