Resumen:
The Brazilian flora stood out for having a vast diversity of medicinal plants. Among them, find Mormodica charantia L., popularly known as Melon-de-São-Caetano and belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae. The present study general objective was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of M. charantia leaves, based on the hypothesis that said extract has activity antibacterial against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The leaves were collected in the month of August 2019 between 5:00 am and 6:00 am. The material obtained was dried in a circulating air oven at 40 ºC for 24 h.
Subsequently, it was crushed, sieved and subjected to extraction used as a solvent
a hydroalcoholic solution (70% alcohol + 30% distilled water) in a 1: 6 ratio
g / ml (plant sample / solvent). For antibacterial assessment of hydroalcoholic extract
methods of diffusion of disk in agar and micro dilution in broth were used.
The microorganisms tested were American Type Colection standard bacterial strains
Culture (ATCC), two of which are gram-positive: Staphyloccocus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), and two gram-negative: Pseudomonas aeruginosa(ATCC 27853) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). The results showed that the extract at a concentration of 50 mg ml-1 showed antibacterial activity in the strains
gram-positive, and with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 12.5 mgml-1.
Thus, it is concluded that the hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of M. charantia
shows in vitro antibacterial activity for Staphyloccocus aureus bacteria and
Enterococcus faecalis.
