Paving design in Brazil is going through a transition moment from empirical to mechanistic-empirical methods. Through implementation of the new National Dimensioning Method (MeDiNa). In this light, this research aimed to propose solutions for reinforcement and reconstruction of existing pavement of the passage between Km
71.0 and Km 85.0 of the BR-230 / PB highway. The choice of such an experimental passagem was due to its importance as a link between the coast and the interior of the state of Paraíba, as well as because it visually deteriorates faster than other segments of the highway. Through functional and structural assessment of existing pavement, it was found that the main cause of deterioration is the incompatibility of structure's stiffness, mainly between base and sub-base. The proposition of reinforcement solution by MeDiNa proved to be inefficient, considering that design thickness reached the limit in 90% of the homogeneous analyzed segments and the thicknesses, obtained through DNIT PRO 269/94 and PRO 11/79 methodologies were also shown very high, making reinforcement intervention unviable. From the point of view of reconstruction solutions, the design proposal using MeDiNa proved to be 50.8% more economical than the design proposal
by current DNIT method, athough maintaining equal or superior performance. However, it was found that variation in the moisture of granular layers of sub-base and sub-grade directly influence the design by MeDiNa, with variations of up to 120% in coating thickness, which was observed according to the moisture of those layers.
