Abstract:
Genetics is an area of Biology, the knowledge of which is closely linked to the daily lives of people, since it has provided major biotechnological advances, such as the examination of DNA, gene editing, and genetically modified foods. Furthermore, genetics has also provided great transformations regarding the way via which living beings are classified; that is, through kinship and no longer through logical similarities. Even though it has a strong impact on society, genetics is still a course that most students find difficult, due to the complexity of its contents. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the main challenges faced by the students in the teachinglearning process in the subject of Genetics. In view of this, 58 students enrolled and engaged in the degree course of Biological Sciences in the Teacher Training Center, Federal University of Campina Grande were interviewed through an online form with ten discursive questions. According to the interviewees, the main difficulties faced in learning the themes related to Genetics are the following: solving questions involving calculations or logical thinking, difficulties in understanding the abstract content of the course, and a lack of a theoretical basis regarding themes that were addressed in High School.
