Résumé:
The inadequate discarding and management of solid waste and effluents have led rural populations to consume poor quality water. The areas that lack essential sanitation services are the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of pollution, for example, the environmental damage and public health problems, which affect mainly children and the elderly. This study proposes measures to improve sanitary conditions in the rural area of São Domingos, Paraíba, Brazil. We carried out a diagnosis during on-site visits, applying questionnaires to each a member of families visited, as well as interviews with the population and the presentation of lectures to the community with the aim of raising the population awareness. From the diagnosis of sanitation, we proposed solutions to improve the conditions of water supply, and solid waste discarding and management. The implementation of basic sanitation in the rural area of São Domingos is vital to population safety, which requires the cooperation of Sanitary Surveillance, Community Health Agents, and the own rural population to plan actions toward the improvement of the sanitary conditions.
