Solar energy is a “clean” and renewable option for producing electricity, with water pumping
being one of the most widespread technologies for the use of photovoltaic solar energy. The
present monograph consists of the use of photovoltaic pumping systems applied to the irrigation
of small agricultural units, especially those installed in dry regions and lacking water, which are
generally the most favorable in terms of insolation, as is the case in the rural area of Northeast
of Brazil. For this, a study was carried out on photovoltaic technology focused on the aspects
most pertinent to the application in pumping systems. From the observation of an irrigation
system triggered by photovoltaic panels and their data, curves were generated and it was
possible to analyze the electric behavior of the pump motor and its pumping capacity, over a
day, as a function of the irradiance and also evaluate this behavior by varying the load imposed
on the system, which occurs when the irrigation lines are activated. The potential of the use of
photovoltaic technology was shown to be relevant in the irrigation of small subsistence
agricultural units, both due to the energy potential in the locality where the system was installed
and due to the volume capacity of pumped water adequate to the agricultural production.
