Abstract:
Pig farming is an activity of great economic importance for Brazil, generating income and
quality animal protein. In this sense, there is a search for greater profitability in the activity,
demanding a financial analysis that enables creation. The costs of feeding in pig farming are
the most expressive and guiding success or failure in the activity. Therefore, the objective of
this study was to analyze the performance between female and male pigs and the viability of
production costs during the period of 63 days, 10 breeding pigs, 5 females and 5 males were
used, separated in two pens (2.5 x 3.0 meters), in an intensive system. They were submitted to
a diet composed of 66% corn, 30% soy and 4% growth nucleus. The animals were weighed
weekly for an analysis of feed consumption and animal development. As a result, it was
observed that each week there was an increase of more than 4 kg per animal, increasing
gradually over the days, reaching 8.6 kg in the last week of weighing. Each animal consumed
an average of 156 kg of feed during this period. There was no difference between weight gain
and feed consumption in relation to the sex of the animal. Females and males consume
practically the same amount and the weight gain proved to be quite similar. In the analysis of
economic viability, on average each kilogram of meat costs R $ 14.00, and the creation of pigs
in Cariri Paraibano is viable.
