Abstract:
Microbiology is classically defined as the area of science that dedicates to the
study of organisms that only can be visualized under a microscope. Many times
this area is forgotten by teachers and this fact occurs because the great
difficulty they find to develop dynamic and attractive strategies of
teaching/learning for the students. The objective of this research was to
describe the reality of the Microbiology teaching in the high school of the Escola
Estadual de Ensino Fundamental e Médio Orlando Venâncio dos Santos
located in Cuité city, in Paraíba (PB). The study was conducted during the
period of August-October 2011, weekly, with the Biology teacher and high
school students of the second year. The procedure adopted was based on the
application of semi-structured questionnaires, direct observation, interviews and
a survey of practical activities of Microbiology. The textbook used at school
follows some of the principles of Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais — PCNs.
Both teacher and most of the students interviewed consider the Microbiology an
important topic and that is related to our everyday lives. in relation to the
practical classes of Microbiology the teacher does not use this didactic modality.
However, most of the students prefer this kind of class because they consider it
more attractive and dynamic, beyond arousing their curiosity. We have
developed two practical activities with the Biology teacher of the school already
mentioned and, after that we also developed one of the two experiences with
the students of the second year of high school, who demonstrated interest and
attention. We have made a didactic revision aid having some experiences and
informations/curiosities about the theme with the objective of helping the
teacher during the practical classes involving microbiological topics. The data
obtained in this research reinforce the necessity in developing new works that
have as objective to perfect the Microbiology teaching in the schools of Cuité-
PB.
