Resumen:
This work seeks to analyze how the celebrations of 100 years of political emancipation
of Caruaru -PE, occurred in 1957 , eventually becoming an agent provocateur of debate
about the city . The Centenary reinforced discourses that sought to further the
progressive character of this town in Pernambuco and at the same time, served as a tool
in asserting the new symbols of progress, or the removal of persons and practices
considered dissonant in relation to development. The most sought after sources for the
composition of this research were the newspapers of the time, Vanguarda, A Defesa and
O Ditador, also commemorative publications of centenary of Caruaru - sponsored by
local businesses and public authorities - and some photographs. The first chapter
discusses the party as an event which handled the city, and how this moment was
anticipated and planned by government, Catholic Church and chroniclers. The second
chapter is concerned to observe some symbols of progress dreamed up by some of the
population materialized from material pursuits. The third chapter looks intends to return
the ambiguities generated by the dream of progress: people considered unwanted,
outdated habits that should be fought in the name of development and, finally, some
dreams of progress were frustrated in that context.
