Résumé:
Popular literature emanates from the people and has as its striking feature the aspect of cultural
history. This research has as general objective to analyze the performance of Major Antônio
Moraes, who is an actor in the Brazilian movie Auto da Compadecida, by Ariano Suassuna, in
order to propose debates for the High School level. The actions taken to achieve this goal were:
first, we articulated conceptions of Discursive Semiotics with emphasis on the Generative Path
of Meaning; then we investigated the values involved in the character of Major Antônio Moraes
with an emphasis on status and power and, as a last action, we systematized thematic debates
for high school, taking into account the performance of Major Antônio Moraes. The
methodology adopted was bibliographic research based on discourse analysis with a qualitative
approach. The research universe of this work are the works of Ariano Suassuna. We selected,
among this universe, as the corpus to be investigated, the work Auto da Compadecida, by the
same author, which is a collection of stories that are part of the daily life of the Northeastern
people. As a technical product, the research guided the systematization of a debate that can be
taken to the high school classroom. As a result of this investigation, we highlight the presence
of Major Antônio Moraes, who, in a space that runs between the city of Taperoá and the Church
of that locality, in a present that refers to an anteriority, seeks the blessing for his son and, for
that, tries to use his status as a Major to exercise pow and a posteriority over those he believes
to be submissive to him.
