Resumo:
The present work for the conclusion of the course of Licenciatura em Educação do Campo focused on
the closing of rural schools in the municipality of Sumé - PB: the case of the communities Pitombeira
and Assentamento Mandacaru, with the research objective of understanding how the process of
closing/nucleation of rural schools of Sumé - PB occurred. The school is not only a place of knowledge
production, it is also a place of socialization, coexistence and political participation, it is an institution
used to socialize people, making them able to deal with issues of the physical, social, economic and
political world. Thus, this paper analyzed the process of nucleation/closure of rural schools through the
testimonials of communities, teachers and managers of rural schools, in order to understand the reason
for this nucleation, and how the administrations behaved in relation to this closure process, because
children are being directly affected, as we can see throughout the work. The profile of the communities
and schools affected by the closure was developed, and then the consequences for the peasant
communities were explored. The first thing to be taken into consideration about the municipality of
Sumé was the issue of the struggle and resistance of communities in defense of rural schools, which is
not common, in the literature we had access, this shows us that the Carioca society has started to treat
the school as a right of their communities to defend what they understand as a right. The second thing
that we observed was the issue that the public power that acted unilaterally in relation to the legal
procedures of closing the rural schools. This is also an ideological dispute of distinct visions about rural
schools. While the community understands/encounters this closing process as a step backwards, the
municipal administration simply naturalizes the fact that the nucleation policy is, or becomes, the best
choice, even with the dissatisfied community.
