The quantity of nuclear material existing in the world is constantly increasing. A fundamental
objective for global security is to minimize the nuclear proliferation risks associated
with this increase. This document present the electronic part of the "Kappa"project:
a handheld device for detection and identification of radiation. We discuss the new technologies
in the field of embedded electronic systems and we analyze the ARM embedded
processors and solutions for components integration. In order to reduce the time-tomarket
and development costs, the device uses the "System on Module"Torpedo LogicPD
AM18x that integrates a T I AM1808 processor, 128MB of Mobile DDR memory, 8 MB
NOR Flash memory, and a power management module. The next step of the project focuses
on the estimation of the performances and power consumption of the system along
with its software environment using an Development Kit.
