Abstract:
Any country that intends to have a higher social development, must look for, among other
things, a system of superior education, consolidated and strong. The institutions of superior
teaching, have to keep their efforts in order to meet the society's needs, and also, contribute to
the cultural and intellectual production ofthe humanity, searching for solutions for the current
issues. On this contcxt, the federal university of Campina Grande, campus of Cuité/PB,
founded a center of education and health, with two main goals. Thc first one is to improve
basic education and lhe second one, is graduating more professionals in the health field, to
work in our region, taking local problems and needs into account. Following this reasoning,
the actual study, through bibliographic researches, investigated what are the growing
deficicncies and thc potentialitics in the town of Cuité, and its neighbor towns as well. Then,
it was verified, in which extent, the research projects and the extention of the program called
Policen are socially comrnitted to those matters, somehow, it is trying to help and also
develop towns and t teir neighbor's economy, education, health system, environment, and so
on. It was chosen qualitative and quantitative methods, and in this fashion, it was carried out
some intcrviews, that weren't well-structured but, they only meant to clarify some points on
the approach and present some statistics about the classification of 155 projects that were
analyzcd, according to the degrcc of social and local applicability. It was also taken into
consideration, the searching projects and their local applicability or not, and the extension
projects, according to their focusses (professional training or public scrvice). By chance, it
was discussed about their programs and activities that have some direct relation to the society
and to the CES goals, too. A little bit ofthis university history, is inside o f this text, as well as
the functions of those institutions and the education, as a transformative practice. This
educational conception, it is found at Paulo Freire's theory, and also in official documents,
such as the National Curricular Parameters (PCNs) and the Law of Guidelines and Bases for
National Education (LDBEN), for example, bcing in consonance with the methodology of the
problematization highJighted in this research. So, this monographic work, seeks to contribute
to a reflcction on educational practices ofthe CES, transforming or reaffirming them.
