With the movernent of modem mathematics, there was a greater appreciation to
the algebraic aspects of mathernatics in the 1960s and l970s, which led to the
bandonment, in our school curricula, with respect to geometry. Although today it ís
understandable how i.mportant the study o f this area for the training o f students, there is
still much to be improved. This paper arose during discussions instigated by a course in
mathematics, as well as questions taken into the classroom and more precisely based on
the participation ofthe extension project at the Center for Education and Health, whose
theme was: "Effect o f use of pentominoes as teaching material for teaching and learning
ofperimeter and area in the school ", with this participation had the opportunity to bring
students build the basic concepts for access to mathematical k:nowledge, more
specifically, area and perimeter, as well also observe how precarious is the application
of geometry in our classrooms. In this paper, we investigate the levei of understanding
o f geometric concepts in the class ofYear 7 F elementary school o f the College o f Barra
de Santa Rosa in the town of Barra de Santa Rosa, based on the ideas of Van Hielle,
relying also on theoretical and Lorenzato 1995, Nasser 2004, Vygotsky 1997, which
represent the geometry as an important tool in mathematics. For this, we use activities
to contribute to the observation of students' leveis of understanding, in order to
investigate the whys of the difficulties for the teaching of geometry. The results, by
seeing each ofthe leveis presented by Van Hielle, gave us understand how students are
developing skills such as observation, analysis, raise hypotheses, seeking assumptions,
ideas and organization, which are related the student's logical reasoning.
