Resumo:
The purpose of this work is to analyze the devotion to Saint Sebastian in the city of
Ipaumirim, Ceará, from a brief characterization of the sociohistorical context in which
the manifestations of devotion developed. The study developed from a broad
theoretical reference, covering the origin of the Catholic religion in Brazil, as well as
popular expressions of religiosity and the dynamics of the emergence of communities
since colonization, especially in the northeast region, in the states of Paraíba and
Ceará . The impact of religion on the formation of clusters, which later became major
cities and even important centers of pilgrimage, is an important form of Catholic
manifestation of the Christian faith, which motivates thousands of people to travel
annually to the places of devotion. Throughout the work, we seek to outline the
emergence and development of the city of Ipaumirim, as well as the importance of
the Catholic Religion in this process, from the Church and Parish of Our Lady of
Conception, around which the city was built. The main milestones that characterized
the beginning of devotion and Saint Sebastian, the development and the current
repercussion of the pilgrimage are presented. Finally, it is possible to conclude that
the Feast of Saint Sebastian represents one of the most important examples of
Christian faith in the municipality and region, with religion representing yes, a
fundamental part of life and daily practices of people, which express their beliefs and
their faith to places of religious worship through pilgrimages and pilgrimages.
