Abstract:
Depressive disorder, primarily characterized by sadness. loss of interest in achvtties and
decreased energy , is the most common mental disorder and is considered a serious public
health problem . lt is believed that the knowledge about depression is of fundamental
importance to the nursing professional , given its role in direct contact with the paticnt, acting
as an active participant in the identification and treatment of various mental disordcrs. The
main goal of this study was identify the concepts of depression by students of Nursing in
Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Cuité campus. This is a descriptive study under the
perspective of qualitative approach, conducted on nursing students who answered a semi-
structured quiz verscd on the subject of depression. The results were evaluated through
Bardin's technique of content analysis. Then discussed based on theoretical contribution and
relevant empirical studics . The main results showcd that most students believed their
knowledge is from good to regular and justi.fied this mainly in the need of improvement and
lack of practical field. Tt was also observed that participants, despite the answers showed
earlier , explained a relevant, holistic and humanized nursing assistance, listing the essential
points that should be recommended in nursing care to a patient with depression. As for
didacticism, the students presented the traditional method as major intluence in the teaching
of the disturbance and proposcd that improvements in education could be achieved with thc
use of active methodologies and articulation of theory and practice. We conclude that the
goals, in general , have been achicved and gaps left by prcvious studies were fulfilled.
