Resumo:
The conscious use of psychotropic medications must be part of the patient care in the Primary
Health Care. With the psychiatric reform, we have a reorganization of the assistance services
and a new patient care model in the basic attention, focusing on the rational prescription of
these drugs and the monitoring of their use. This research aimed at investigating the mental
health care provided to patients who were in a continuous use of psychotropic drugs in LastroPB
city. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with quantitative and qualitative
approach. According to the list prepared by the Community Health Agents, 170 people
assisted at the Basic Health Unit were on a continuous use of psychotropic drugs for more
than two years. Based in this population, a sample of 50 patients randomly selected, answered
the questionnaire with subjective and objective questions. The collected data were statistically
categorized and tabulated. In accordance with the results, we concluded that women are the
main consumers of psychotropic drugs (64%) and the elderly had the highest rate of use. The
most commonly used drugs were benzodiazepines, specially Diazepam. The general
practitioner was responsible for 48% of the prescribing, and the highest number of
prescriptions were made at the basic health unit. Regard to the monitoring, 74% of patients
reported that were not accompanied, however, when they were asked about the satisfaction
with the care services, 64% reported being satisfied and 36% said they were dissatisfied and
would like to be better accompanied by the health professionals. Thus, we noted that the most
patients seem to be satisfied only with the medical recipe. So, this study pointed to the need
for a monitoring to reduce the number of dependents of these medications, and also the
creating of strategies to education on health, focusing the quality of life and the active search
for the patients that have to be accompanied. More studies should be developed aiming to
change this reality about the indiscriminate use of psychotropic, and the accompaniment is the
first step to build this model of care, guided not only by the pharmacological prescription.
