Resumen:
This study aimed to know the conceptions o f academics of the tenth semester o f the Nursing
coursc ofthe Federal University ofCampina Grande, Cuité campus, about the role ofnurses in
CAPS. This is a descriptive study under the qualitative perspective ofthe approach that included
the participation o f 19 students, 14% female and 5% mal e with an average age o f 26.89 years,
who answered a semi-structurcd questionnaire. Thc data were analyzed by the tcchnique of
contcnt analysis proposed by Bardin. The results of this research showed that academicians
present elaborate conceptions about mental illness. Care to patients with mental illness was
discussed in the disciplines Mental I Jealth. Psychiatry and Psychology. Students reported that
thc actions developed in their stages of mental health are recreational charactcr, and they said
had no difficulties in meeting them. Regarding the approaches of caring, have been passed to
thc students, they discoursed that was satisfactol) manner, explaining human assistance and
holistic care, listing the key points that should be recommended in the nursing care for a patient
with a mental disorder and thcrefore know the role ofnurses in CAPS. When asked ifthey feel
able to work in CAPS, half of those interviewed said no and the other half said yes. These
results were discussed based on theoretical issues and relevant empirical studies.
