Resumo:
The Night Eating Syndrome (NES) is an eating disorder (ED) that have been related to a
delay in thc circadian rhythm of food intake. with three rnain characteristics: morning
anorexia, evening hyperphagia and insomnia or night. Studies have observed a relationship
between excess calories consumed ovemight with weight gain and the onset o f obesity occurs
earlier in life in those with NES. Given this association between eating disorders and
overweight and the current epidemic of obesity, it is important to investigate the nocturnal
feeding habits and their correlation with obesity. The present study aimed to characterize the
prevalence of NES fernale students enrolled in high school Published network Municipality
Cuité - PB. The methodology consisted of applying self-report questionnaire, using the Night
Eating Questionnaire, translated and adapted to BraziJian version by Harb, Caumo & Hidalgo
(2008). The questionnaire consists of 14 questions and each question has five possible
answers (0-4). To evaluate the association between weight and age on the occurrence ofNES,
BMl was used in accordance with the parameters suggested by the World I Jealth Organization
( 1995). 90 students aged 14 to 21 years were evaluated. The N ES was observed in 1.1% o f
interviewed students and 8.9% presented risk to develop it; analysis of nutritional status
showed that 5.5% were overweight, 3.3% and 2.2% characterized with overweight and
obesity, respectively. However the data showed no association between NES. overweight and
age. Viewed the constraints faced in this study, it becomes apparent the need for further
investigations to assess the existence of the relationship between NES and obesity occur in
order to a more efficient exploitation by part of heaJth professionals. seeking an early
diagnosis ofthis syndrome, which presents as a possible consequence of obesity.
