Abstract:
Series compensation on transmission lines affects the performance of protective devices based on estimation of fundamental phasors of voltages and currents. However, the influence of series compensation on high frequency content of these signals when fault occurs needs a thorough investigation. Then, this dissertation aims to assess the effects of fixed series compensation employment, as well as the effetcs of fault parameters ( fault inception angle , resistance, and location), in function of fault-induced transients on transmission lines. The investigation of these effects may help the development and application of travelling waves-based fault- induced transients is performed by means of the wavelet coefficient energies for both voltages and currents. The different fault scenarios required by this analysis were obtained by means of fault simulations. In order to complemented: one based on fundamental frequency estimation and another based on travelling waves theory, by using the wavelet transform. Both these methods require data registered in both terminals of the line and were assessed for non-compensated and series compesated lines. A sensitivity analysis of the parameters that more affect in these methods, such as compesation degree and fault parameters, were also performed, as well as a comparative analysis between their performances.
