This research will address the phonetic and phonological changes in Portuguese, occurred
during its formation history, embracing the changes from Latin to the Portuguese as we
know today. And yet we bring an approach that may be useful in the Portuguese language
teaching in basic education series, with special attention to the teaching of phonetics and
phonology. In this perspective it will try to make a path of internal transformation of the
Portuguese language by starting the classical Latin, through Vulgar Latin, Galician-
Portuguese, Portuguese archaic, classic to contemporary Portuguese, making the discussion
of the characteristics and modifications in the language each of these phases. Will base our
work on theories Coutinho (2011), Ilari (2006), Cardeira (2006) and other authors who
deal with these changes. Along the way it will be shown that, among other factors, the
phonetic and phonological changes were responsible for many changes in other language
courses, and the spelling system that is currently in force is the result of these changes. In
addition to this route we will make an analysis of the collections: Vontade de Saber
Português (2012) and Português: contexto, sentido e interlocução (2013), the first of
elementary school and the second high school. We assess how these collections deal with
the history of the Portuguese language, if not bother to bring this approach, and also how
they make the approach to phonetics and phonology, which aspects are taken into
consideration. Before this analysis will deal with the metaplasm a diachronic and
synchronic perspective. Finally, we show some proposals that may assist in teaching from
a historical perspective and teaching of phonetics and phonology.
