Resumen:
Cardiac arrest (CA) is a clinicai condition characterized by evidence of
impending lack o f responsiveness, picture o f apnea and absence of cardiac activity and pulse.
Because it is a sudden onset is necessary for nursing professionals are in continuous training
in order to provide the update regarding the technical procedures necessary to provide an
effective service and correct. Objective: To assess the knowledge of the nursing stafi about
assistance in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with a focus on the new protocol in Basic Life
Support (BLS). Methodology: This was an exploratory-descriptive research approach
quantitaiva conducted with 70 nursing professionals, including nurses, tecbnicians and
assistants. The study should last for three months (February to April 20 12), being held in the
networks of low (the Family Health Strategy) and the municipalities of medium complexity
cuite (Municipal Matemity Hospital cuite), New Forest (New Hall Hospital Forest) and Picui
(PicuJ Regional Hospital). To collect data we used an instrurnent with 26 objective questions
involving the identification of demographic and professional participants as well as questions
related to the treatment protocol in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Basic Life Support (BLS). In
preparing the database and statistical analysis software was used Excel 2007 and wbose
results were presented descriptively in the form of graphs and tables using frequency
distribution (f) and percentage (%), and discussed the ligbt of the literature relevant. The
research protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee and Research Colleges of Nursing
and Medicine New Hope (F ACENE I FAMENE) in Protocol 197111. Results: Of the 70
professionals who were part of the sample, 26 (37.1 %) were nurses, 36 (51.4%) nursing
technicians and eight (11.3%) nursing assistants. The average age of participants was ± 33.14
years, with most females (88.6%) and stable relationship (51.4%). Only 27.1% ofrespondents
agreed the correct sequence (CAB) recommended for patient care in cardiac arrest. As regards
to compression I ventilation for one and two rescuers, respectively, 43.0% and 60.0%
correctly answered this question. The duration of the ventilation applied during the course o f
resuscitation there was a significant lack of this variable by the sample (85.7%). Likewise as
to the applicability of the technique hook EC in the case of the use of ventilation devices
knowledge was insufficient because 80.0% answered the question incorrectly. Regarding the
frequency and depth of chest compressions 37.2% and 52.9% answered correctly on these
variables. Approximately 60.0% and 51.4% reported never having performed CPR on his
professional practice and not conducted training courses in the area, respectively. However,
91.7% showed interest in hone knowledge on the subject. Conclusion: The field and the
realization of constant updates of care protocols in cardiopulmonary resuscitation constitute
an irnportant condition in the practice of professional nursing care. However, it could be seen
from the results obtained in this research, there is a deficit in relation to the frequency of
training in the area by the same.
