Resumo:
The lack of sanitation services in small cities raises concerns about water pollution throughout Brazil. This paper presents a proposal for a sewage treatment system in the municipality of Jericó, Paraíba. We photographed the sewage disposal sites and gathered information about sanitation services in public agencies. The photos and public information allowed to characterize the current condition of sanitary sewage system. Environmental impacts caused by inadequate disposal were identified to propose an adequate effluent treatment system. The current sanitary service of Jericó is inefficient. We suggest the Australian system, including an anaerobic lagoon system followed by a facultative lagoon, as the best cost benefit to solve the sanitary issues in Jericó. Such a system has been suggested by Brazilian legislation and provided good treatment conditions for the study area.
