Resumo:
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a lenient and silent-onset neurodegenerative disease
that affects cognitive and memory-related functions, being said as the main
cause of dementia in the elderly, representing more than half of the cases of senility. With
the progression of the disease, the characteristic signs and symptoms are showing more and more
characteristic and debilitating. The current form of treatment shows an unavailability of cure
or a way of stabilizing the disease, with the treatment being aimed at alleviating the signs
and clinical symptoms as soon as noticed in order to delay its progression. Although,
the conventional first-line pharmacotherapy does not alter the advance or stop the
neurodegeneration that is characteristic of the disease. Therefore, the use of plants
medicinal as an alternative or therapeutic adjuvant conventional medicine can serve
as a tool for a more effective treatment, also gaining prominence as a way of
prevention. The objective of the work was to carry out a literature review about the plant
medicinal Rosmarinus officinalis, popularly known as Rosemary, being used in
treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. The period researched was for works starting from
January 1998 to June 2021. A total of 50 articles were found, 11 of which
included in this review. Clinical studies, meta-analyses and systematic reviews of studies
clinics have shown the efficacy, quality and safety of extracts, essential oils, teas and
isolated metabolites for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. so it is
medicinal plant that deserves attention for its action in disease control, not having presented
also signs of adverse effects in the studies performed. However, it is always important
ensure its rational use, mainly by the role of the pharmacist in guiding the
user.
