Abstract:
Injuries to the anatomical structure of the skin of diabetic patients can cause
chronic wounds that can lead to physical and psychological impairment, limb
amputation and even death. Patients with diabetes mellitus have a delayed wound
healing mechanism, the infections in these lesions further increase the chances of limb
amputations and death in these individuals. The treatments used for this patients are
often expensive, show variable efficacy and are not available to everyone. The need
to find safe, accurate and economical wound healing promoters has led medicinal
plants and their natural products to be used to treat these comorbidities. Therefore,
this work aimed to propose a formulation design containing natural extracts of Aloe
vera and Allium sativum incorporated in a hydrogel base for the treatment of infected
diabetic wounds, based on the functional characteristics found in these extracts and
the advantages that this pharmaceutical form provides for the environment of the injury.
This study is a systematic literature review, aimed at extracting information to help
define the specificity of the research and provide a theoretical basis for constructing
the design of the formulation. The results obtained through the literature review
collaborate for the possible application of the formulation, since several studies have
obtained significant results when using these components for the treatment of diabetic
wounds. The proposed formulation design has several advantages, such as: use of
natural extracts with desirable functional effects for wound healing, with simple
processes for obtaining, a safe pharmaceutical form that can provide greater
effectiveness in healing and the use of low-cost components.
