Abstract:
The guabirobeira (Campomanesia xanthocarpa Berg.) is a plant widely used by folk medicine
and has some proven pharmacological activities. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of
Guabiroba extract supplementation on anxiety parameters in rats submitted to a high-fat diet.
The animals consumed a diet rich in lipids for 21 days. After this period, the animals received
0.1mg/kg of weight of hydroalcoholic extract of the Guabiroba leaf, by gavage, for 30 days.
Four groups were constituted (n=10): 1) Control (C) – received distilled water and commercial
feed; 2) Hyperlipidic Control (CH) received distilled water and consumed the hyperlipidic diet;
3) Guabiroba (G) – received guabiroba extract and commercial feed; 4) Guabiroba Hyperlipidic
(GH) – received guabiroba extract and consumed the hyperlipidic diet. Anxiety parameters
were assessed using open field (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM) and light-dark box (LDB)
tests. Data were analyzed using the Anova Two way test followed by Tukey being considered
p<0.05. The results showed that in the OFT animals from experimental groups G and GH, when
compared to control groups C and CH, showed greater ambulation and rearing and less time in
grooming. In LDB, the animals supplemented with the extract spent more time on the light side
of the box and transited more often between the two sides, when compared to the control groups.
In EPM, the G and GH groups had a longer stay and a greater number of entries into the open
arms, when compared to the control groups. From the results obtained, we can suggest that the
supplementation of guabiroba extract had a positive action on brain function, promoting a
potential effect on the reduction of parameters related to anxiety.
