Abstract:
Anxiety is a emotional state, which when generated by unknown factors becomes
pathological. The most used drugs for its treatment are benzodiazepines, which cause
adverse effects and dependence, and with this, the use of medicinal plants in the
treatment of anxiety has been increasing. The choice of theme was due to the increase
of people with anxiety, and the prevalence of adverse effects and dependence caused
by anxiolytics, in order to seek alternatives to improve the quality of life of patients, so
that the objective of this study was evaluate the use of Valeriana officinalis as an
alternative in the treatment of anxiety. An integrative literature review was carried out
from June to August 2021, in which articles and publications from the last 5 years were
searched, available in the following databases (Medline, Lilacs, Scielo, Google
Scholar), and of the national and international health committees, using pre-selected
descriptors. 79 articles were found, of which 58 were adopted and used. The results
showed a great efficacy of valerian in the treatment of anxiety, using it in several
indications, with few reports of undesirable effects, thus showing that Valeriana
officinalis can be an important alternative in the treatment of anxiety disorders, and that
the pharmacist professional is of paramount importance in the pharmacotherapeutic
follow-up of patients, and in the indication of non-pharmacological therapies.
