Abstract:
The animal welfare (BEA) theme has stood out precisely with regard to animal law.
The BEA is the animal's ability to interact and live well in the environment in which it
is inserted, which must provide good food, comfort and health conditions, exempting
the animal from suffering, from sensations such as fear, pain, anguish and the
repression of their natural behavior. These WEA conditions are lost in homeless
animals, which is quite worrying in view of the problems associated with stray
animals and mainly because of the suffering they are subjected to. In this sense, the
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) focused on animal protection are
characterized as a solution to this abandonment, acting on reception, better
conditions and quality of life, important factors for the maintenance of animal welfare.
In the city of Caicó-RN, the Caicoense Association for Animal Protection and the
Environment (ACAPAM), is an association that is responsible for providing
assistance to stray animals in the city and offering better living conditions for them.
So, knowing the importance of NGOs for the protection and promotion of animal
welfare, the aim of this study was to describe the performance of ACAPAM,
highlighting the infrastructure and activities developed in the institution aiming at the
welfare of the animals sheltered by it. The study has a quali-quantitative nature,
classified as descriptive and was carried out through visits to the NGO's premises in
order to describe the environmental aspects offered to the animals, through the
analysis of the annual reports produced from 2017 to 2020 and in the adoption forms
of January to June 2021. As for environmental conditions, the shelter has
accommodations that meet favorable welfare requirements, such as good housing,
hygiene and adequate food conditions. In terms of health, the shelter works by
removing animals from the streets in critical situations and provides them with
veterinary care, treatments, vaccination, deworming, castration, among other health
factors ranging from rehabilitation and stay in the shelter to adoption of the animal .
ACAPAM faces difficulties in meeting the demand of all animals, but strives to raise
funds in an attempt to expand this service and improve their conditions for animals,
mainly through actions and dissemination of activities developed by the same on
social networks. Thus, the NGO serves non-domiciled animals and, above all,
through its performance, it maintains the structure, accommodation and good health
conditions, providing the well-being of the animals sheltered by the institution.
