From the origin of the Latin language to the emergence of the Neo-Latin languages, the Portuguese language underwent several modifications. Therefore, working with lexical variation in the classroom, from a sociolinguistic perspective, based on the evolutionary study of the Portuguese language, enables a more coherent teaching and a greater understanding of the phenomena present in language. The general objective of this work is to elucidate the importance of working on the concept of linguistic variation in the classroom, from a lexical and sociolinguistic perspective, starting from Latin. Taking a journey through the history and evolution of the Portuguese language in order to understand the phenomenon of linguistic variation and demystify the concept of “right” and “wrong” imposed on the language. Therefore, as specific objectives, we will analyze how lexical variation is worked in the textbook, Se Liga na Lingua, from the 1st year of high school, by the authors Ormundo and Siniscalchi (2016), then develop an activity proposal to the teaching of linguistic variation, which addresses the treatment of lexical variation, through a sociolinguistic bias directly linked to the construction of the Portuguese language, in order to develop a more reflective learning. For the development of this research, the following references were used as theoretical basis: the contributions of Cardoso (s/d), on the lexical historical formation of the Portuguese language, Labov (2008), on the sociolinguistic patterns, Assis (s/d), on the history of the Portuguese language, Bagno contributing to historical grammar (2007) and Basilio to lexical theory (2016). The methodology used was a bibliographic research, as previously published materials were used, such as books, theses and scientific articles. From this research we explore the evolutionary path of the Latin language until the emergence of neo-Latin languages and the aspects of lexical variation and its contribution to the construction of the Portuguese language. Enabling, with this, to develop a new teaching perspective, focused on working with linguistic variation, starting from the lexical varieties that built the Portuguese language, so that the idea of right and wrong in the language is end.
