Resumo:
The study aimed to identify the environmental impacts of the occupation in risk areas in the city of
Alagoa Nova-PB, aiming to propose adequate procedures for improvement of environmental quality
and social. The identification and characterization of the qualitative impacts were realized from the
use of the method list control-Check List, which consists of the list of consequences (impacts) from
which they identify the impacts of a specific project. Identification and description of environmental
impacts were based on data provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics-IBGE
(2010) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation-EMBRAPA (1911-1990). From the
analysis of the environmental impacts that was diagnosed between the negative environmental impacts
of the ongoing expansion of settlements in urban areas stand out the most relevant vegetation removal;
drastic changes in topography, sedimentation of watercourses and continuous erosion. It was observed
also that through data collection, disposal of solid waste in the city of Alagoa Nova-PB represents a
potential threat to local environmental resources, especially regarding the environmental quality of
soil, air, and surface water therefore the presence of an open-air dumps as the main area of final
destination of waste exposes the study area to these conditions, since it does not have the necessary
infrastructure for the protection of environmental resources (soil, water, air and society), and affects
the health and welfare of the population. Therefore, a policy aimed at the socio-economic development
necessarily involves, sanitation policies and environmental quality.
